Fatigue

Fatigue is common across all groups, but Black Americans face unique factors that increase its burden. Higher rates of chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease can contribute to persistent fatigue. Chronic stress from racism and discrimination, along with the emotional labor of navigating healthcare and workplaces, can also drain energy. Black patients are more likely to have fatigue dismissed or attributed to lifestyle rather than fully investigated, which can delay diagnosis of serious underlying conditions.

Overview

Fatigue is more than just feeling tired after a long day — it is a persistent, overwhelming sense of exhaustion that does not improve with rest and can interfere with daily activities, work, and relationships. It can be physical, mental, or both, and may come on gradually or suddenly. Fatigue is one of the most common reasons people see a doctor, and it can be a symptom of many different conditions, from sleep problems and stress to anemia, thyroid disorders, diabetes, heart disease, and depression. Finding the cause is key to getting the right treatment.
